It's unbelievably good. I normally keep post car related, but I had to share this. It's a real landmark film. If any of you guys are real movie or film people, I definitely recommend you watch it. It just hits everywhere.

If you're not familiar, this movie was shot over 12 years, filming about a month at a time. They simple follow the story of how life happens to us all; it's scripted, obviously. It was written and directed by filmmaker Richard Linklater, who brought us the Amazing Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy (One of my personal favorites) and more notable Dazed and Confused.

I seriously, seriously recommend this film.

Just to point out, oppo is like an off topic forum. Sharing things car related is okay and I prefer it. You don't HAVE to make every post car related. It helps people share their interests with other people here, so you get to know them better. So people complain. . . but why? If they want to talk cars only there is a whole forums dedicated to that. Which reminds me. . . I have to post something.

I don't normally want to see a movie in theaters, but this one is one that I really want to see just because of how it was filmed.

As long as it's not ostentatiously something that most people here wouldn't like, off topic seems fine.

Rate it on how important it is to understanding life and the world around you, as a form of fictional education, ranging from Baby Geniuses (0) to 2001: A Space Odyssey (100).

Well duh, I know it's not forbidden to talk about anything else. I guess I'm just stating how important to me it was to share my opinions of this movie.

I'm a big movie buff, so I figured there were a couple others here.

I could give you the link, I pirated it and watched it on the internet. I use a Mac, so I can make no promises about pop-up, viruses, etc. But the video worked great for me.

It really is a whole new yardstick. I can't really compare it to anything else cause this just gives such a more in depth view their lives.

Something about knowing that they didn't cast other actors for younger or older versions just makes it so much more.

I did the same with Before Midnight came out. That series, it is a romantic movie, the make a sequel every 9 years. Same filmmaker, but revolutionary in a totally different way. The whole script is almost one big conversation.

But in all seriousness, with my other comment, compare it to 2001. Does it reveal the same depth of complex understanding of the world, or is it more "down to earth" and superficial?

You know, you would think that having this happen in real life would be creepy, and you would be very correct.

Especially when you've just met the person and it is in a work setting.

I wouldn't say it's superficial by any means. I think, as a guy, there were just a lot of moments were you look and go 'I've been there' or 'I've felt that.' Meanwhile, all the other characters also change around him while he's growing, so you pick up and relate to some of the changes.

It's a film about growing really. It doesn't teach you one lesson or anything, There wasn't anything that was supposed to happen, you just try to watch be functional and grow. There's so many times in our childhoods when we were confused or just being stupid and young and thinking we know what's best and he hits on it so well.

I do better with more 'abstract' existential films, but that's probably because my childhood doesn't relate to most childhoods. It will probably be weird watching this then, because I'm already getting an 'on the outside, looking in' vibe from it. I'll probably write up some thoughts about the film when I finish watching it, so maybe I'll make an oppo post/review.

Go for it. I think Linklater's thing in his movies is amazingly smooth dialogue. It's not that things happen, (explosions, deaths, adultery, etc.) more that the characters will interact in such a way that you get all of the up and down just from the interaction.

one thing my family and I debated about was the whole "Alaska thing" with his dad. Do you think he really went? I thought of it as an elaborate lie since the mom thought the kids were too young to fully understand divorce. But my mom and dad didn't think twice about it and figured he did.

Also, one thing that my parents kept pointing out was how "weak" he seemed for being so affected by the events. What do you think? I felt bad for him and was impressed he turned out so well considering the stuff he went through at a young age. Maybe it's because I'm 16 so realted to the movie way too easily.

Last, can you believe that it was rated R???

Well the last telephone pole in my neighborhood is in my backyard (thats why I was stuck with Dial-Up until 2008) It makes slow sites extra slow, I really have to be selective with streaming sites

Kinja'd!!!1

Rated R for what, feels?

The Alaska thing was more than likely exactly what you said. It's purpose was to be subtle and there's small facial cues (quick glance down or pause) when he talks about it; trademarks of a lie. Ethan Hawke is a brilliant actor, so I fully believe he factored that into his performance.

I wouldn't say he was weak really. I think he was misguided at times, like all kids. He spent his teenage years being cynical spouting off bullshit about technology, the man, the government, corporations, blah blah. Average stupid teenager stuff. He'll grow out of it

But, his birth father was the exact example of the change that happens right where the movie ended. The movie took us to the beginning of college; he's a free spirit, photogrpher, liberal, etc. like his dad once in the beginning of the movie. Over time, he may level out and change majors (like most every college kid) and do something that pays well.

I didn't like the movie too much, but i don't regret watching it. Its got pretty boring sometimes. And what i did like about the movie is that, you relate to many things the kid went through a he was growing up. Also i liked that they include everything about time passing. The changes and advances on videogames, cellphones, technology, cars, world events, history. They did a great job on that. Pretty much it shows how life sucks, but also how it goes up other times. life is a pattern that always repeats changing a few aspects along the way.
While it was very boring sometimes, i couldn't stop watching, it was interesting as a whole. The ending is terrible, so overall i would give it 6/10.

Magnolia crosses multiple storylines to show the inter-connectivity of the human condition. It's also more dramatic. This film was much more understated in its themes. I think Magnolia is recognized for its individual performances ie Did anyone know Tom Cruise could act like THAT? Whereas Boyhood is more so about the script

I thought it was one of the ten best movies to come out so far this decade. So understated, but incredibly powerful. I'm a few years older than the boy but man did some of the nostalgia hit me right in the feels.

The truck driving scene with his girlfriend to go visit college hit me in the face like a ton of bricks "OK here's this kid that I now feel like I watched grow up becoming an independent adult" I agree with you, he has grown up to be like every 18 year old ever in regards to the cynicism and pseudo-philosophy but just like his dad, he too will one day be proudly driving that mini-van.

Question, have you ever just sat in the theater and stared at rolling credits while mind-fucks are going off in your head? Or was that just the power of Arcade Fire.....

Warren looks like The Alamo Drafthouse - nice theaters, full food & bev in-seat service, etc. The Drafthouse is run by serious movie nerds, so they even have a sort of "private label" distribution thing - they go find interesting flicks and put them in their theaters.
